Replacement Speakers for Sea Ray Boats

-->

Your Sea Ray's factory speakers have failed. Or they're distorting, cutting out, or sounding thin at any real volume. If you've replaced OEM speakers before and watched them fail again a few seasons later, this page is worth reading before you buy another set.

DC GOLD Audio has been building waterproof speakers for over 40 years. The design lineage goes back to Babb Engineering, whose cockpit speakers appeared on production boats in the 1970s and are still running on boats today. DC GOLD speakers drop directly into Sea Ray's factory cutouts — no drilling, no adapters, no modifications. And once they're in, they're in for the life of the boat.

Why Sea Ray's Factory Speakers Keep Failing

Sea Ray builds an exceptional hull. The factory audio is a different matter.

Through the 2000s and into the 2010s, Sea Ray equipped their boats with Clarion OEM speakers — budget components selected to hit a dealer price point, not to perform on the water for a decade. When Brunswick consolidated brands, Fusion became the new supplier. Better-branded, same limitations. The failure arc is consistent across every model and year:

  • UV surround failure — The foam surround cracks and delaminates under prolonged sun exposure. Bass disappears first, then overall output drops.
  • Tweeter failure — The tweeter dome dries out and stiffens. High frequencies go harsh, then distorted, then silent. Usually the first component to go.
  • Crossover corrosion — Passive crossover components corrode in saltwater air. The signal path degrades even when the drivers themselves are intact.
  • Cone moisture absorption — Paper-composite cones absorb moisture and lose stiffness. The speaker distorts at any real volume before failing entirely.

This is not a Sea Ray-specific problem. Every major boat manufacturer installs OEM speakers that are not designed to outlast the hull. They're a service revenue item, not a permanent fixture. The only way to break the cycle is to install speakers that were actually engineered for longevity.

The DC GOLD Difference — Built to Last as Long as Your Boat

DC GOLD's design starts from a single question: what makes marine speakers fail? The answer is almost always one of three things — tweeters that can't handle UV and salt, crossover components that corrode, or cones that absorb moisture. DC GOLD eliminated all three.

  • No tweeters. No crossovers. Every DC GOLD speaker is a single full-range driver. No tweeter to crack, no crossover capacitor to corrode. The signal goes straight to one cone and one coil. Less to fail means longer life.
  • Aluminum and magnesium alloy cone. DC GOLD cones don't absorb moisture. They don't rot, delaminate, or warp in the sun. A UV-treated foam surround and ferrofluid-cooled voice coil complete a design built for full sun, saltwater spray, and pressure washing.
  • Handmade in Palmdale, California. Each pair is built to order by a small team. Not mass-produced offshore. DC GOLD controls every stage of the build.
  • Rebuild-for-life program. Every DC GOLD speaker can be returned to the factory for a full rebuild — new surround, new voice coil, refreshed components. You don't replace them. You rebuild them. No other marine speaker manufacturer offers this.

DC GOLD's engineering descends directly from Babb Engineering, which built cockpit speakers for production boats starting in the 1970s. There are Babb-lineage speakers on the water right now that are older than most of the boats they're mounted in — surviving hurricanes, sinkings, and decades of saltwater exposure. When DC GOLD owners talk about longevity, they have five decades of evidence to point to.

What Size Speakers Does My Sea Ray Use?

Almost every Sea Ray built after 2000 uses 6.5" round speakers in the cockpit, gunwale, and cabin positions. DC GOLD's N7C and N7R have a 6.23" cutout diameter and a 7.4" face OD — they drop directly into Sea Ray's standard factory hole with no modification. The face covers the factory grille ring cleanly.

Sea Ray Series Models Factory Speaker Size Location(s) DC GOLD Match
Sundancer 250, 270, 290, 310, 330, 350, 370 6.5" Cockpit, cabin N7C Classic or N7R Reference
SLX 230, 250, 280, 310, 350, 400 6.5" Cockpit, cabin N7C Classic or N7R Reference

Sundancer (pre-2000) 250, 270, 290 6x9" oval Bow N69C Classic or N69R Reference

Not sure what size your Sea Ray uses? Pull one speaker and measure the hole in the fiberglass — not the speaker itself, the cutout. Match that to the table above. If you're still unsure, contact DC GOLD before ordering — they confirm fitment on every order before a speaker is built.

Model-by-Model Guide

Sea Ray Sundancer — 250 / 270 / 290 / 310 / 330 / 350 / 370

The Sundancer is Sea Ray's defining model — built for owners who use their boats seriously and expect them to perform. Cockpit speakers are 6.5" in the gunwale or cockpit sidewalls. Cabin speakers are the same size in the headliner or forward bulkhead. Pre-2000 Sundancers, particularly the 250 and 270, often used 6x9" oval speakers in the bow.

If your Sundancer is more than seven or eight years old and still running original Clarion or Fusion speakers, they've either already failed or are close to it. They were never going to go the distance. The Sundancer was built to last decades — the audio should match. The N7R Reference is the right call: DC GOLD's highest-fidelity full-range driver, with a carbon nano-tube composite dust cap that delivers more detail and nuance at anchor or moderate cruising speed.

Recommended: N7R Reference for cockpit and cabin. N69R Reference for any 6x9" bow positions on pre-2000 models.

Sea Ray SLX — 230 / 250 / 280 / 310 / 350 / 400

The SLX is Sea Ray's premium sport boat. Owners who choose an SLX are buying the best version of the platform — the factory Fusion audio is the one thing that doesn't reflect that. All cockpit speaker positions are 6.5".

SLX owners who've already replaced Fusion speakers once know the frustration. Doing it again in five years is not acceptable on a boat like this. DC GOLD's answer is a speaker that goes in once, can be rebuilt when it eventually needs service, and never needs to be replaced.

Recommended: N7R Reference for all cockpit and cabin positions.

Sea Ray SDX — 250 / 270 / 290

The SDX is Sea Ray's deck boat — wide-body, maximum seating, open layout where sound disperses fast. DC GOLD's 92 dB sensitivity at 1W/1m gives you real volume without taxing your battery system. All cockpit and bow speaker positions are 6.5".

Recommended: N7C Classic for owners who push the volume. N7R Reference for owners who want both durability and sound quality.

Sea Ray SPX — 190 / 210 / 230

The SPX is Sea Ray's workhorse bowrider — used every weekend, all summer, year after year. Cockpit speakers are 6.5". These boats get used hard and the speakers should be able to keep up.

Recommended: N7C Classic.

Older Sea Ray Bowriders — 175 / 185 / 190 / 200 Select (pre-2005)

These models are more varied. The 185 Sport and 200 Select from the early 2000s frequently used 5.25" speakers in bow positions and sometimes 6.5" in the cockpit — occasionally both sizes on the same boat. Measure the cutout before ordering. Contact DC GOLD if you're unsure.

Recommended: N5C or N5R for confirmed 5.25" positions. N7C or N7R for 6.5".

Pre-2000 Sea Ray Sundancers — 6x9" Oval Bow Speakers

1990s-era Sundancers commonly used 6x9" oval speakers in the bow. These are difficult to replace because most modern aftermarket speakers only come in round sizes. DC GOLD's N69C and N69R are direct-fit 6x9" replacements — same cutout, same mounting pattern. If those original ovals have been on your Sundancer for 20 years, they're done. The N69 replaces them permanently.

Recommended: N69R Reference for Sundancer owners. N69C Classic for boats that run harder.

The Installation

DC GOLD speakers are direct drop-in replacements. For any Sea Ray cockpit speaker position:

  1. Remove the grille ring — typically a pop-fit cover or two screws
  2. Disconnect the factory wires, noting polarity
  3. Back out the mounting screws — typically three or four into the fiberglass
  4. Connect DC GOLD leads to the same terminals, matching polarity
  5. Set the speaker into the existing cutout — no modification required
  6. Secure with the included hardware
  7. Replace the grille

Most owners complete a pair of cockpit speakers in under 30 minutes. No cutting, no routing, no adapter plates.

Verify depth before ordering. DC GOLD's N7C/R requires 3.33" of cavity depth behind the mounting surface. Most Sea Ray cockpit positions provide 4" or more. If you have any doubt about depth on your specific model, contact DC GOLD — this is part of their standard pre-order confirmation process.

Classic or Reference — Which Is Right for Your Sea Ray?

Both lines share identical physical dimensions and drop into the same cutouts. The difference is in the cone materials and what you'll notice during playback.

Feature N7C Classic N7R Reference
Cutout diameter 6.23" 6.23"
Face OD 7.4" 7.4"
Mounting depth 3.33" 3.33"
Cone material Al/Mg alloy, proprietary coating Al/Mg alloy + carbon nano-tube dust cap
No tweeter / no crossover
Ferrofluid-cooled voice coil
Rebuild-for-life program
3-year warranty
Sensitivity (1W/1m) 92 dB 92 dB

Price per pair $738 $994

Both speakers will outlast the Clarion or Fusion they're replacing by a wide margin. See the full Classic vs. Reference guide for more detail.

The Rebuild Program — Why This Is the Last Speaker You'll Buy

Every DC GOLD speaker can be returned to the factory in Palmdale, California for a full rebuild — new surround, new voice coil, refreshed components. The cost is a fraction of a new pair. The result is a speaker that performs exactly as it did when it was first installed.

No other marine speaker company offers this, because no other marine speaker company engineers for it. DC GOLD builds their speakers to be rebuilt, not replaced. The aluminum cone lasts essentially indefinitely. What wears over time is the surround and voice coil — both fully serviceable, the same way a marine engine can be rebuilt rather than replaced.

For Sea Ray owners who've spent money cycling through OEM speakers, the rebuild program changes the equation entirely. You invest in a speaker once. It stays on the boat, gets serviced when needed, and is still performing 20 years from now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these fit without cutting new holes in my Sea Ray?
Yes. Any Sea Ray cockpit position built to the standard 6.5" cutout — virtually all models from 2000 forward — accepts the N7C or N7R directly. The 7.4" face OD covers the factory grille ring cleanly.

What speakers did Sea Ray install from the factory?
Sea Ray used Clarion as their primary OEM supplier through approximately 2015, then transitioned to Fusion. Both are engineered to a dealer price point, not for longevity. Most owners see OEM speaker failure within 5 to 8 years.

Can I use my existing wiring?
Yes. DC GOLD speakers are available in 2Ω, 4Ω, and 8Ω to match your existing head unit or amplifier. Order the impedance that matches your current system. DC GOLD will advise if you're unsure.

Do I need an amplifier?
No. DC GOLD speakers are highly efficient — 90 to 92 dB at 1W/1m — and perform well from a quality marine head unit. An amplifier extends headroom but is not required.

What if a speaker needs service years from now?
Send it back to DC GOLD. It gets rebuilt and returned. You don't replace it. That's the model.

My Sea Ray is 20+ years old — will these still fit?
If your Sea Ray was built with standard cockpit cutouts, yes. If your boat uses a different size, contact DC GOLD — they'll identify the right fit before building.

What is the difference between Classic and Reference?
Both share identical dimensions. The Classic is optimized for high-output environments — running at speed, offshore, in wind and engine noise. The Reference adds a carbon nano-tube composite dust cap for greater detail in the midrange, most noticeable at anchor or moderate speed. Both dramatically outlast any factory speaker Sea Ray ever installed.
